The Grid

I have gotten very mixed responses on this so far, and I want everyone's honest opinions.
I am working on a project that I call The Grid. It is essentially a simulator for a political environment. There will be about 500 "cells" that represent families in a country. Each has a series of equations that takes the actions of their neighbors and input from government and media and comes up with a series of reactions. Whoever is operating The Grid adjusts what the government says and how much power it has. The idea is that you could try out any political reform on the simulator before actually applying it to a community.
For now, it's all on paper. This summer I will be moving it to either Excel or some other program that can perform these types of equations.
Some of the variables I've come up with so far are political views (liberal-conservative),respect towards authority, care for neighbors/society, Income level, total currency savings, happiness level, health, productivity, resource usage (represents food, etc), and currency usage (represents tax dollars for things like school, etc.).
Anything else I should add? Or do you think I'm a lunatic for trying something this complex?

Love it, but then again, I do computer modeling for a job.

I would start with as simple a model as possible to start with and add complexity and features as go you.

I'll be interested to see what you come up with. You could work it into some sort of board game like Settler.

Sounds interesting. Has Egypt inspired you?

Very cool idea. Right now a lot of local towns (Corvallis, Eugene, Beaverton) are going through budget cuts and trying to get citizen input in order to make the politically correct cuts. There seem to be a small number of very influential people who determine the final outcomes. Some of the communicators use interesting arguments like sustainablility, diversity, safety and protecting the disadvantaged. Good luck.

The Simpsons figure a model UN into the plotline occasionaly. I like Eldon and Janeil's suggestion for:
"sustainablility, diversity, safety and protecting the disadvantaged". I'd understand sustainability to include the environment. Willingness to invest in the long-long game. It gets sticky, but religion seems to be inappropriately influencing politics more and more lately. Could that be a factor?

I say go for it! What's the worst that could happen? Btw, it's nice to see you post again!

how about 1) the strength of the military-industrial complex, 2) degree of unbridled support of Israel, and 3) willingness to spill blood and treasure to foreign soil?

I believe your Mom wrote that last comment.
